Brontez Purnell: Confirmed Bachelor LP
When Chris from London-based label Upset The Rhythm asked me to design the artwork for a Brontez Purnell album, I jumped at the chance, saved the info he’d sent and promptly half-forgot about it for a week or two.
It was only later, when it was time to work on it, that I really became aware of the album’s fantastic title Confirmed Bachelor and Oliver Yan’s intriguing photos.
This was looking as if it could be an interesting project.
About Brontez Purnell
I’ll readily admit to not having heard of Brontez Purnell at this point, which is absolutely no reflection on him. A cursory internet search reveals he’s something of a multitalent.
He’s been making music since the 1990s, with his bands Gravy Train!!! and Younger Lovers, as well as releasing material under his own name, including a single on Sub Pop, the label that brought the world Nirvana and Mudhoney.
Not content with just making music, he’s also an award-winning writer, with four books under his belt to date.
And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also a filmmaker, dancer and choreographer.
Confirmed Bachelor – the artwork
The design brief was very open-ended, which is how I like them.
After checking out some of his music and videos (quirky, fuzzy, colourful and catchy) I thought I’d better come up with some quirky and colourful artwork ideas.
Once I’d got the all-clear to realise them, I began shifting pixels about and setting type, and this is the result.
